On the 20th of August, 1968, at 11.00 pm, the troops of the Soviet Union, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and the GDR invaded Czechoslovakia in order to stop the political reforms of the liberalization of the Prague Spring led by Alexander Dubček. It was the largest military operation in the history of Europe after the Second World War. 175 thousand participants took part in it up to 500,000 soldiers.
Today, 50 years after this event, former participants representing the Warsaw Pact countries are returning to that history. In five short films made by directors from Russia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and Germany, veterans of Operation “Donau” tell from their own perspective how a great story has met a small human being.
