Dance Theatre Centre in Warsaw 2017-2019

Dance Theatre Centre in Warsaw brings together over 70 male and female artists associated with the city of Warsaw. Attempts to create a permanent place dedicated to dance in Warsaw date back to 1933 and, among others, the initiative undertaken by a versatile choreographer Tacjanna Wysocka, the Grand Theatre?s prima ballerina Halina Szmolcówna, and an outstanding expressionist dancer Pola Nireńska. Despite this, such a place has not been created over the next decades. After the political transformation in 1989, the contemporary dance circles became more active. We saw the creation of festivals such as Body/Mind Festival, International Meeting of Live Arts CROSSROADS, Zawirowania International Dance Theater Festival, Warsaw FLOW Festival, SIC! International Dance Improvisation Festival, WARSAW DANCE DAYS. Thanks to the initiative of the dance community, both from Warsaw and the whole Poland, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage established the Music and Dance Institute, which is currently carrying out a regular project of spectacle presentations and workshops in the Studio Theatre ? Studio Dance Scene. Starting from 2001, there have been many non-profit organisations that tried to create a permanent place for dance artists to showcase their craft. We saw the creation of places such as Centre in Motion, Warsaw Dance Department, LUB/LAB, Warsaw Commune. There were projects that showcased Warsaw artists, such as Warsaw Dance Scene, Warsaw Dance Platform, Dance Activism in the New Theatre or a pilot project ? Dance Theatre Centre at the Mazovian Institute of Culture. All the activities led us to where we are now: for the next three years, contemporary dance will have its home at the KADR Culture Centre under the name Dance Theatre Centre in Warsaw. The directors of the CST are Paulina Święcańska and Agata Życzkowska, with the support of 18 non-profit organisations from Warsaw.

2017 PROGRAMME / ARTISTIC PRESENTATIONS
As part of the programme, the CST will present a broad spectrum of contemporary dance that will include such forms as dance improvisation, spectacles based on structure, installations, interdisciplinary spectacles and performance. After each spectacle, we host conversations between the artists and the audience. In 2017, the performances are taking place each Monday, from September to December. In the next years, the programme is going to be expanded with further activities, such as education, animations, dance theory and criticism.
The 2017 programme is divided into two cycles: A SEA OF POSSIBILITIES and THE EYE OF THE STORM

A SEA OF POSSIBILITIES
Presentations in this series will showcase various practices and different approaches to contemporary dance. The performances in this series will include propositions of different approaches to contemporary dance techniques, as well as premieres, performances by artists debuting in the field of contemporary dance and performance or renowned artists cooperating with artists with a smaller artistic output, spectacles and installations for children.

EYE OF THE STORM
Centre of turbulent events. Centre of important matters. Centre that is sometimes dangerous, shocking, surprising. The spectacles presented by the artists in this cycle will take up the important topics in starkly varied ways. Artists use improvisation, build tension with micro-movements, use performative techniques, combine different dancing styles and different fields of art: dance/theatre/film/music/visual arts ? they use video, build installations or act in empty spaces. One thing that all the artists’ performances have in common is that they are like the eye of the storm ? they take up themes that are important, stormy, sometimes dangerous, extreme, but close to all of us.
After each spectacle, we host conversations between the artists and the audience
